Brief of ANCOPEN Choir

Great oaks from little acorns grow, goes the popular saying. The ANCOPEN CHOIR which today is a force to be reckoned with among the Choirs in the Diocese of Lagos, had a modest beginning in 2004 with some pioneer members of the church and their children constituting the first set of choristers. Notable among these were: Sis. Yetunde Adeyemo, with her twin daughters, Taiwo and Kehinde; Sis Lola Odewunmi, with her son, Ayo; Sis. Margaret Obidike, Sis Mary Abara, Bros. Tunde Akintobi and Chinedu Ezeobi. Others include Seun and Laolu Akinlade, Henry Macaulay Jnr, Morenike Odebiyi, Olumide Britto, Femi John and Chimdi Igiwe, most of whom are now schooling abroad. There were no choir robes or musical instruments except a Yamaha keyboard. Sis Lola Odewunmi used to lead choruses accompanied by the organist, Sola Fadiran. Choir practices were held on Saturdays in the house of the then Vicar, Rev. Canon ‘Yinka Akinlade at Road 3, VGC. The transformation of the Choir began with the appointment of Dr. Adetokunbo Akanbi as Choirmaster sometime in 2004. It was a gradual process which has blossomed into the Choir which we can all be proud of. To God be the Glory! One cannot but acknowledge the role and efforts of some long-serving choristers who joined later and who have contributed in no small measure to the success of the Choir. They include: Bro and Sis Soala Benibo, a couple who are now in the USA on posting, Bro. Tosin Akeredolu, Sis. Nkechi Keri (the oldest member), Sis Ndidi Nwosu, Sis. Nwaeri Ajoku, Bro. Adewonuola Akanbi, Bro. Chido Okoli and Sis Biola Nnaobi, Choir Secretary. The Choir since her inception had enjoyed the services of three organists and one assistant organist. They are: Bro, Sola Fadiran, the pioneer organist, Bro. Genga Tairu, Dec. 2007 to April 2011, Bro. Tosin Ajayi, April 2011 to date, as well as Sola Bajomo, mid-2011 to date. The first Choir Festival was held on 2nd November, 2008. The Guest Preacher was the Rev. Festus O. A. Ajayi (now Revd Canon). Part of the donations raised during the service was used to purchase the Samick piano in the Penhall Chapel. Choir Festivals are held annually, with the 5th Festival held on Sunday, 11th November, 2012. Other programmes include the annual Passion/Easter concert, and Christmas Service of 9 Lessons and Carols, apart from her primary responsibility of leading the congregation in worship. The Rodgers Digital Organ currently in use by the church was dedicated during the 3rd Choir Festival held on Sunday, 31st October, 2010. The ANCOPEN CHOIR features in Diocesan and Archdeaconry programmes whenever invited to do so. On Sunday, 10th June, 2012, the Choir was invited by the Provost of the Christ Church Cathedral, Marina, to stand in for the Cathedral Choir which were on vacation. The Choir robed during the 9.15am Choral Matins and 11.15 am Holy Communion Choral services and performed creditably well. The ANCOPEN CHOIR whose motto is Give God Your Best…Expect His Best has a tradition of excellence which is built on commitment, dedication, the fear of God, continuous training and studying the Word of God, prayer and fasting. We pray that God Almighty will continue to lead the ANCOPEN CHOIR from glory to glory in Jesus Name. Amen.
